The common and beautiful sighting of the European robin is a rather pleasant one as usually it will be spotted singing on top of a tree or shrub at dawn. This bird is one of the most prominent of all the dawn chorus.
Size
These robins are fairly small compared to their close relatives the American robins as the European robins are roughly only 5 1/2in compared to the 8-11in of an American. They can weigh 16-22g with a wingspan of 20-22cm (8-8.5in). But if you think the robin itself is small it’s eggs are only about 2cm long altogether!
Location
As the name would suggest, it comes from the vast majority of Europe, Northernmost Africa and has been spotted in parts of Russia and Siberia. They can also be found in some Atlantic islands such as the canaries, Azores and Madeira. It’s habitats consist of many forests and grasslands but they will venture off to farmland and occasionally wetlands.
Population
On the IUCN the robins population is doing fantastic as they are classed as least concern which is really good. This is because their numbers are already huge at 130-201 million individuals and this population is still growing by a lot. With the UK containing roughly 10% of the population and Europe holding around 89% as for Asia they have around 1%.
Muscicapidae Family Group
European robins are in the family Muscicapidae or old world fly catchers which is completely different family from the American robin. Usually people associate robins with blackbirds which is actually factually correct as they are both in the same genus. This group consists of over 300 species who are widely distributed across Europe, Asia and Africa.
Diet
Many robins are garden birds who will mainly live off of bird seed that humans put on feeders. Whereas robins that live in completely natural places will usually eat food like worms, berries, nuts, and invertebrates (insects). They are even known to follow gardeners around as they dig up many nutritious bugs and worms for the robin to eat.
Predators
Many larger birds of prey or predatory mammals will prey on European robins as they are fairly small and can’t fly that quick. It’s usual predators include fox’s, owls, bobcats, shrikes, and hawks who will snatch the adults but most corvids will grab an egg from the nest. Every year huge numbers of robins are killed by domestic cats which is awful.
Fun Facts
Did you know that because robins are so territorial when it comes to the breeding season in Spring and early Summer they will actually start attacking their own reflection in windows or lakes, so if you see a robin pecking precariously at the water you don’t need to help it because it is fine.
